Lyrics
3 girls and a boy on a summer night
In ’54, mama said, we gotta go, sit tight
Pack what you need in one small bag
We gotta get the hell out, things are going bad
She drove a green Studebaker, down a dirty road
I was young when we left, she was digging for gold
South all the way to the water’s edge
Where she kept the politicians & their friends in bed
I can’t help what I miss, what we already had
This was the first of a life we were destined to have
My heart can’t relax, it’s needles and pins
I wanna be that kid again
Next thing you know we were down at the Inn,
Fixin’ it up for the rich men
Secrets came on yacht and plane
Mama helped ‘em out steady
She was ready for fame.
But the boy & girls got in the way
Of schemes mama made with her chief and chain.
So she lined them up after school each day
To Confess their sins, Confess their shame
I was missin’ the days when things weren’t so bad
This was more of the life we were destined to have
My heart can’t relax, it’s needles and pins
I wanna be that kid again
When good little girls go along & obey
They’re easy to cheat, they’re easy for prey
But this little girl was really smart
And knew a bad thing, I was swimming with sharks
After sharks & thieves fed on the young
Looking up at the sky & the big bright sun
I searched for something to comfort my cry
& found a black and yellow butterfly
I took a fantasy trip down to Mexico
In my mind I went to places where lantana grows
Fairies, frogs & fish were in my dreams
I could finally fly & spread my wings
My heart will relax its needles and pins
I wanna be that kid again
